Transformative Renewal Therapy℠ (TRT)

By Robert F. Fischer, MD

Transformative Renewal Therapy℠ (TRT) is a process by which people are reacquainted with the state of consciousness of childhood like that discussed by Shunryu Suzuki in the Zen Mind, Beginner’s Mind. Think how a child is able to get up and walk, fall down and get back up to try again and again, sharing the experience with parents, and eventually experiencing the joy of success. This is a similar state of consciousness to that expressed in Rumi’s poetry long ago that creates habits that allows you to find joy to make you go.

The Transformative Renewal Therapy℠ (TRT) consists of two parts:

  1. Transformative Process – Finding the ability to learn as a child does before the wreckage of life has constructed its barriers – as is found when an adult plays in a safe environment.
  2. Renewal Process – Identifying a passion and sharing this passion with other people.

What is it that provides the biological imperative or intrinsic motivation to learn? Donald W. Winnicott wrote about the concept of transitional phenomena. He identified play as an important process by which people acquire skills and learn.

Renewal, as used here, stems from the Attachment Theory proposed by John Bowlby and Mary Ainsworth. Renewal occurs when one finds passion and shares the passion with others who validate the experience of joy. This allows one to sustain the joy.

Transformative Renewal Therapy℠ (TRT) is an experiential-focused approach for developing mindfulness that facilitates awareness of a variety of emotional states using play in a creatively designed multi-media sensory space. Experiential processing strategies are used to help people intentionally reproduce positive emotional states at will.

The Transformative Renewal Therapy℠ (TRT) Process includes the following steps:

  1. Creation of an emotionally safe, non-judgmental, and validating, environment to experience intense feelings; a play space.
  2. Exploration of passion through play.
  3. Expressing of passion through play.
  4. Sharing the found passion with others.
  5. Transformed by experiencing joy.

Transformative Renewal Therapy℠ (TRT) is a uniquely effective and efficient process.
